JOHN ROMÃO
John Romão was born in Portugal, in 1984. He studied Theatre at ESTC - Lisbon Theatre and Film School and attended a post-graduation in Art Curation at FCSH - New University of Lisbon. He participated in the international theatre course Nouvelle École des Maîtres, directed by Rodrigo García in Zaragoza, Liège, and Rome, and studied Aesthetics and Theories of Contemporary Art at National Society of Fine Arts (Lisbon). His complementary formation includes training with several artists such as Vera Mantero, João Fiadeiro, Wim Vandekeybus, etc.
He has worked with Tania Bruguera, Romeo Castellucci, Rodrigo García, Tiago Rodrigues, Jorge Andrade (mala voadora), Mariana Tengner Barros, Jorge Silva Melo, Paulo Castro, Nilo Gallego, Francisco Salgado, Miguel Loureiro, Jean-Paul Bucchieri, Maria João Machado, Marcos Barbosa, Ninho de Víboras and Harvey Grossman. He collaborated with different visual and video artists, musicians, and choreographers, such as João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, Pedro Mira, Diego Beyró, Carlos Sáez, Marsen Jules, André Godinho, Carlos Conceição, Daniel Romero (.tape.), Nilo Gallego, Elena Córdoba, Luis Artemio De Los Santos.
Romão started to develop his work as theatre director in 2001. In 2009, he co-founded Colectivo 84, where he develops directing projects. Between 2006-2017 he worked as dramaturg and assistant director to the Spanish-Argentine theater director Rodrigo García. He also collaborated, as assistant director, with Romeo Castellucci, at the Biennale di Teatro di Venezia / Biennale College (2010-2011). Invited by Castellucci to represent him at Festival d'Avignon (2013), he participated in the project Voyage du Kadmos (project for new theatre directors).
His work has won and was nominated for several awards: Prémios Novos 2014 - Theatre; Jovens Criadores Nacionais 2012 - Theatre; Emergentes 2011, Almada Terra das Artes e da Criatividade 2010, for his work in theatre. His shows were nominated by the press as best theatre shows of the year (Time Out Lisbon 2013 and 2011, Expresso 2011).
He has served as Lecturer in Theatre in universities such as Lisbon Theatre and Film School and Lisbon School of Dance, where he is now guest lecturer. He has also directed workshops in national and international institutions.
He is the artistic director and chief curator of BoCA - Biennial of Contemporary Arts, in Lisbon and Oporto.
